IT architecture

The IT node of the Swiss "participant node" is deployed in a multi tiers architecture. This architecture comprises an application server which hosts the software related to the GBIF project. The application server provides the interface for the Internet users. The database server runs on a multiprocessor machine connected to a SAN type mass storage system. The data will be managed with an Oracle database. The database server is a centralized implementation of the "data node" concept. It stores the data of all institutions that have chosen this solution for their integration in the context of the Swiss GBIF project.

Currently, the Oracle 9i database as well as the application are hosted on the same server. The server runs on a Xeon processor under Linux/Redhat. It has 75GB of harddisk and 4 GB of RAM.

The targeted IT architecture is described in the report of January 28, 2004 that was presented in Bern.
